Bangladesh to send protest note to UN on India’s maritime claims

Bangladesh will formally lodge a protest with the United Nations against the maritime claims of India and Myanmar on its extended continental shelf in the Bay of Bengal, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said. “A diplomatic protest note will be sent to the United Nations against the maritime claims of India and Myanmar,” Hasina said during question time in the Parliament yesterday.

The permanent mission of Bangladesh in the UN in consultation with local and foreign experts is preparing the protest note which will be submitted to the UN at the earliest, she said.

The government is also trying to resolve the dispute with India and Myanmar through bilateral diplomatic channels, she added.

The area of Bangladesh’s claim in the extended continental shelf in the Bay of Bengal is 29,000 square nautical miles but India and Myanmar’s claim differ from it.

According to the UN Convention on the Law of the Seas, 1982, any coastal country is entitled to first twelve nautical miles from its baseline as territorial sea, 24 nautical miles area as contiguous zone, the next adjoining 200 nautical miles as its exclusive economic zone.
